Change the default date and time format for fields

Hello,
When i use the insert date field it inputs the date as month - day - year in the format 02/12/10 and i have not been able to change or modify the default format.I want to change the field default date format to - day, day number month and year so that i do not have to edit it each time i use it.Any help would be appreciated.
Please help.
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
